Level 1 Coaches
Ryan Amos - Sheffield & South Yorkshire
Level 1 Qualified
With 30 years of experience working in sport, I am passionate about helping people participate, perform, and grow. As a former professional rugby player, I’ve seen firsthand how sport can build confidence and connection. My career in sport development has focussed on creating inclusive opportunities supporting both coaches and leaders to deliver quality experiences at every level.
My coaching journey began in rugby before branching into cricket, where I coached youth teams including my own children, and now into Pickleball – a sport that perfectly combines skill, strategy, and
social connection. Over the years, I’ve supported, developed, and mentored hundreds of coaches,
helping them to unlock potential and achieve their personal goals. My approach focuses on the
individual – understanding what motivates them, to support their growth both on and off the court. I also bring experience as a former strength and conditioning specialist, which informs my understanding of movement, performance, and safe progression.
I now co-run Sheffield Pickleball Academy, delivering sessions that support Sheffield’s growing Pickleball community.
As the South Yorkshire County Representative for Pickleball England, I’m passionate about
helping the sport thrive locally and creating pathways for new players and coaches. I offer individual coaching, small group training, and larger development sessions across Sheffield and the surrounding areas, helping every player progress with confidence, enjoyment, and purpose.

Nick Allen Smith - West Yorkshire
Level 1 Qualified
I am a Pickleball England Level 1 Club Instructor. I set up a pickleball group last year based in Thongsbridge Rackets Club, near Holmfirth, and it now has 45 seniors, ie ladies and gentlemen over 50, playing twice a week. This was a deliberate strategy to get the club established at low risk and off to a solid start. I have now launched the families and young people initiative which will give access to a much wider and younger demographic. I will continue to provide the opportunities for exercise in a sociable environment and want everyone to be able to play at the level they feel comfortable with, from social not-too-serious games to inter-club matches. The aim is to feel that you’ve achieved something healthy while having some fun!
For many people, the desire to improve their game is strong whatever their age, skill or level of fitness. At an individual level, my coaching aims to understand learning styles, carefully assess needs, recognise any physical/age restrictions and tailor coaching accordingly. Some just want a one-off introduction and some want regular sessions. I teach families or small groups which adds another dimension of fun and mutual encouragement.
On a wider basis, I want to introduce pickleball to a wide spectrum of the population, promote the health-giving benefits and show that it is fun whether you want a hard, competitive physical game or just want it to be sociable and not too competitive.
I have been a decathlete to county level, an athletics coach, orienteer, squash and tennis player and have always been passionate about health and helping others to fulfil their potential.
I am based near Holmfirth and am happy to travel to anywhere in the Huddersfield, Leeds,
Sheffield or Doncaster area.
IPTPA
Pickleball England also recognise the INTERNATIONAL PICKLEBALL TEACHING PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION (IPTPA) qualification. As acknowledged in the Club Instructor workbook some of the concepts in our curriculum are based on IPTPA.
PickleballEngland provides the coaching insurance for IPTPA Coaches listed on the IPTPA website (click button below). Since this is a dynamic list, we can’t list everyone on this page. We also don’t have visibility for which coaches have all the above evidence.
Other Qualifications
If you have another pickleball qualification (including IPTPA) and want to be listed on this page, we do require that you meet the guarantee on the top of the page. We have a low cost conversion option to be recognised by PbE. Email coaching@pickleballengland.org for more information.
