Level 1 Coaches

Gary Simpson - Yorkshire
Level 1 Qualified

I learned pickleball in the home of the game i.e. the U.S.A and continue to be mentored by coaches from Phoenix Arizona where I started playing in 2014 and return most years for holidays. My coaching learning base therefore is fluid as I am routinely in contact with my mentors and update & adapt my coaching to reflect developments in pickleball tactics and skills and training drills to pass on to my students.

Based in Yorkshire I have been introducing folk to pickleball since 2017, enabling them to develop and improve up to intermediate level and beyond. I established Ripon Pickleball in 2017 and also founded pickleball play in Nidderdale and introduced the game to the High School P.E. department there too.

My talent centres around being an approachable experienced pickleball tutor, mentoring both beginner level and also bringing players on to a firm foundation in intermediate play. I tailor input to meet individual requirements or to suit group coaching. Teaching sound shot making and confidence to play from all areas of the court are important starting points; then moving on to develop strategy and tactics as part of the learning process.

I specialise in building confidence at the net for beginner level. For intermediate level I specialise in teaching initiatives for retaking control of a rally when under pressure either from the back of the court, when pushed out wide, or when engaged in fast furious volley play at the kitchen line.

My other area of interest is in developing opportunities for pickleball play amongst marginalised groups in society, wheelchair users and bringing this fun accessible sport to young and old alike.

IPTPA

Pickleball England also recognise the INTERNATIONAL PICKLEBALL TEACHING PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION (IPTPA) qualification.  As acknowledged in the Club Instructor workbook some of the concepts in our curriculum are based on IPTPA.

PickleballEngland provides the coaching insurance for IPTPA Coaches listed on the IPTPA website (click button below).  Since this is a dynamic list, we can’t list everyone on this page. We also don’t have visibility for which coaches have all the above evidence.

Other Qualifications

If you have another pickleball qualification (including IPTPA) and want to be listed on this page, we do require that you meet the guarantee on the top of the page.  We have a low cost conversion option to be recognised by PbE.  Email coaching@pickleballengland.org for more information.
